Ada: Age 3

Thoughts from my journal entries during Ada's 4th year of life:

3 years, 3 months
She weighs 30 pounds now and is about 37 inches tall. She had her follow-up appointment from her heart catheterization procedure this week and her heart is all better! The procedure worked perfectly and it will never be an issue for her again! So that was great news. The chest x-ray she had done didn't show any signs of scoliosis (well, maybe just a tiny bit, but very mild) – at least not so far. She has seemed to have more energy and less dark circles under her eyes since the heart catheterization.

Ada, age 3.5, proudly holding her brand new baby brother, Aaron, age 13 days old on Christmas morning - also born with Beals Syndrome.

3 years, 4 months
Ada saw the hand surgeon and the pediatric orthopedist yesterday. Both said she looks great and has shown a lot of improvement and that they'll see us again in a year. I wonder if they will keep monitoring her yearly like this throughout her childhood. There is some concern about Ada's hand strength/coordination. She has shown a lot of improvement with her thumbs, but the concern is when she gets to the age in school when she is learning to write --- will she be able to control the pencil/pen the way she wants and needs to to make the letter and also will she has the strength endurance to write for very long. Abe vaguely remembers writing in early elementary school and says he remembers his hand would get very tired quickly. Her occupational therapist said she may only be able to write for 5 or 10 minutes at a time when she is young. But we won't know until we get there. So for now we just keep encouraging activities that build up her hand strength.

Ada, age 3.5... see how she is crossing her fingers (you may have to click to enlarge the picture)? She used to do this all the time. It has gotten much less frequent with each passing year. She did it with her toes and her knees (when lying down) all the time too. We weren't sure why. Our other children born with Beals have not done this, so we aren't sure if it is related or not.
